Estonian World: Photographer Birgit Püve – capturing identity and memory

Birgit Püve is an Estonian photographer whose work has been shown around the world. A former journalist and editor, Püve’s work focuses on memory and identity. In 2014 she received the third prize at The Taylor Wessing Photographic Prize 2014 at London’s National Portrait Gallery.

For almost 20 years the 23rd floor of Tallinn’s city centre Hotell Viru functioned as the radio translation room for the KGB. After the Soviet Union collapsed and the room was discovered, it was left alone completely intact until five years ago, when it was turned into a museum.
